Young People In The City

Young People In The City

‘Junge Leute in der Stadt’ is a 1985 film based on the 1932 novel of the same name by Rudolf Braune. The film combines documentary and feature film sequences and deals with the problems of the late 1920s.

Story

Berlin during the Great Depression of 1929: unemployed taxi driver Emanuel sees no future for himself in the city and wants to try his luck elsewhere. Before doing so, he wants to cross the city once more by car. His friend Fritz lends him his taxi. During the journey, Emanuel meets two dancing girls and falls in love with one of them - Susi. She is young, beautiful, carefree, self-confident and taken with the shy young man. She persuades him to stay in Berlin. A policeman is stabbed to death at an unemployed demonstration. Emanuel is suspected and arrested in the evening at Susi's Revue, where young people and friends meet with their problems and desires.
