Görlitz has a very special relation to this film, because the real Goethe visited the city during his lifetime, when his muse Minna Herzlieb lived here. You can still find her grave here at the historical cemetery Nikolaifriedhof.
For the cinema production, the Untermarkt was turned into a wintry setting in Strasbourg in the 18th century: with horse-drawn carriages, chariots, market stalls and cattle. And since everything is possible in the film, it even snowed during the shooting in the middle of the summer.
The romantic drama by Philipp Stölzl tells a story, which took place in summer 1772. When the rebellious law student Johann Goethe fails the state exam, his strict father sends him to the country to work through archives and to continue his studies. There he meets the beautiful Charlotte Buff and falls in love with her.
