Görliwood is the proud winner of the European Location Award of the Decade

Görlitz has won the title of "Best European Film Location of the Decade” of the European Film Commission Network (EuFCN). The award is part of the 10th Anniversary celebration of Filming Europe, the Association of European Film Commissions, which aims at celebrating the diversity and multifaceted nature of European locations.

Görlitz has been awarded as a film location for "Grand Budapest Hotel". It was in 2013, when Görlitz’s unique shooting locations piqued the interest of US director Wes Anderson. He spent 40 days in Görlitz shooting his award-winning masterpiece “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, which starred Ralph Fiennes, Jude Law, and Bill Murray in the leading roles. The main place of action was an art-nouveau department store from 1913, which was transformed into the film’s eponymous hotel. “The Grand Budapest Hotel” was the opening film for the 2014 Berlinale. It scooped up four Oscars®, including the one for Best Production Design.

“The award is the crowning glory for our City and all contributing to the good reputation of Görlitz as Film Location. For us, this now is a huge incentive to be a high quality location for future productions, too”, so Mr Siegfried Deinege, Mayor of Görlitz. “Thank you to all Görliwood-Fans voting so numerously”, adds Mrs Andrea Behr, Managing Director of the City Marketing company Europastadt GörlitzZgorzelec GmbH. “We all cordially invite you to the Film City Görlitz!”

The world visits Görliwood®

Görlitz never ceases to excite with a lot of charm and a romantic atmosphere. Even well-known Hollywood producers rave about the authentic and diverse scenery of the town and its unique architecture. Görlitz remained almost undestroyed during the Second World War and with its 4000 or so historical buildings spanning 500 years it provides a periodic atmosphere and a lot of inspiration for many filmmakers.

Görlitz was used as film location for the first time in the 1950’s for the film “Der Ochse von Kulm”. Since then, about 100 productions were filmed here often with several days of filming during one year. And this is how the former insider tip turned into a popular film location with a diversely changeable face. New York, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Paris, Heidelberg – Görlitz has represented all these cities in films.

For the lavish film version of Jules Verne's "Around the world in 80 days", with Jackie Chan, whole streets and the "Landskron"-Brewery changed into the harbour of New York. In 2008, the story of bestselling author Bernhard Schlink, "The reader" was produced in Görlitz. Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes were playing the main roles. Finally Kate Winslet won the popular Oscar® for it. Quentin Tarantino chose the region for his highly observed production "Inglourious Basterds" which also was awarded with more than one Oscar® and in summer of 2009, artificial snow felt down and covered the Untermarkt-square. At the Gründerzeit quarter they filmed "The tower" by Uwe Tellkamp in 2011. Shortly after that the first 3D-Movie in Görlitz was made: Detlev Bucks' "Measuring the World". In winter 2012/13, Wes Anderson chose the Art-Nouveau Department store in the middle of the town and the formal city hall as the favourite film locations for "The Grand Budapest Hotel", a big Hollywood-production. At this time, the City welcomed famous Hollywood stars like Ralph Fiennes, Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum, Willem Dafoe, Tilda Swinton, Jude Law, Bill Murray and Owen Wilson.
