Just a few minutes away from the city’s splendid Old Town, a nature paradise is waiting for you: 960 ha of glittering water, sandy beaches and the deep green of the 420 m-high Mount Landeskrone, the city’s “private” mountain. This is where tourists and locals can get away and chill.
Here in the border triangle Germany-Poland-Czech Republic, families and people looking for various kinds of leisure activities will all find something according to their taste: the 16km-long and nearly completely asphalted trail around the lake passes bathing sites, playgrounds and a nature reserve. At the banks and near the lake, cyclists, skaters and walkers can enjoy lovely nature and beautiful views at any season of the year. For water sports enthusiasts, like surfers, sailors and stand-up paddlers Berzdorf Lake is ideal to live their passion.
If you just want to go for a swim, several bathing sites invite you to get into the crystal-clear and refreshing water.
The bathing season at Berzdorf Lake starts on the 1st of May. Bathing is allowed at the Northeast Beach, at the peninsula, and at the Blue Lagoon; the season ends in early October.
For dogs, there is a beach south of Deutsch Ossig.
The sailing season starts in early April and runs until end of October. Sailboat sailing or slipping must be done from Görlitz harbour or from the Blue Lagoon. Rowing, paddle and canoe boats may also be used or landed via the entrances of the bathing sites. The access for windsurfers is located at the southern end of the Northeast Beach. A landing and mooring of boats at the boat berths "Neundorfer Weingarten" and "Fernblick" is not permitted, with the exception of dangerous situations. All other uses require a separate application.
The experience of summer on the lake with many offers on site as well as the sailing and bathing season will certainly attract many visitors this year to the Berzdorfer See.
Also in 2019 many events are planned. The Europastadt GörlitzZgorzelec GmbH (EGZ) is particularly pleased that the Lake Festival (Seewoche) and the Festival at the Blue Lagoon (July 26th/27th, 2019) are coming together for the first time this year and will be offering a good time for the visitors from July 26th to August 4th, 2019. Highlights include the Euroimmun Regatta as well as the Sailing Event (Schausegeln) in front of Deutsch Ossig. Do not miss the atmospheric night sailing with illuminated boats in the Blue Lagoon (July 27th) followed by fireworks.
In addition to the sailing highlights, there are numerous events for visitors during the Lake Festival (Seewoche): Music concerts and shows will provide a good mood at the opening weekend, both at the Blue Lagoon and in Deutsch Ossig. The mobile cake buffet (Kuchenfuhre) of Heimatverein Tauchritz (July 27th), which travels from the Blue Lagoon to Deutsch Ossig on the way along the lake, will be able to enjoy a break. Here, too, the jam championship (Marmeladenmeisterschaft, August 3rd) is again a popular and delicious highlight in which visitors are welcome to try the jams submitted. At the bicycle station on the northeastern beach Little John Bikes allows test rides on ebikes (August 3rd). And all the little visitors are enjoying themselves during the animal walks from the nature conservation zoo (August 3rd).
Whether sporting challenge, music or fun with the family - there will be something for everyone.
If you want to be in close touch with the clear water, you have the opportunity to rent pedal boats or boards for stand-up paddling at the Northeast Beach to explore the lake. You might even rent a big board for up to six persons offered by a boat rental at the lake called “Symphonie der Freizeit“. You can also learn how to do stand-up paddling; the individual or group courses are fun to join with your families or friends, they are also a perfect idea for classes of schoolchildren, or for teams, as a teambuilding event. Our recommendation: Go on a guided tour at sunrise or sunset.
Sailors and would-be sailors set sail at the Harbour Görlitz or the sailing base at Blue Lagoon. While sailing courses for kids and adults are held at the harbour by the „Symphonie der Freizeit“, there are numerous other events taking place at the Blue Lagoon: sailing training for kids and youngsters on Saturdays, an International Kids Sailing Camp as well as the International Sailing Regatta „Three Country Cup“ and the Final Regatta.
Sportsmen without sails are welcome to join the Zgorzelec Triathlon or the „Swim 'n' Run” Competition.
The Zgorzelec Triathlon covers either the olympic distance (1.5km swimming, 40km cycling, 10km running), or a short version (750m swimming, 20km cycling, 5km running). The first stage is swimming, which starts at the Berzdorf Lake, before getting to Zgorzelec, where the participants will cross the finish line in the stadium.
The „Swim 'n' Run“-event held by the European Marathon Association is expected to be another exciting competition, and fun to watch, too. Pupils, young people and adults are invited to compete against each other covering different distances at the Harbour Görlitz. The boat ramp will be a perfect place to get into and out of the water.

Whether refined gastronomy or rather ice cream and bratwurst – there is something for everybody’s taste. The restaurant and wellness hotel Insel der Sinne, the Gut am See, the Kiosk and the Café at the harbour and the catering facilities at the Blue Lagoon invite their visitors to come in and stay. In addition, there are more places to drop in around the lake.
Experiencing the summer at the lake, this also means to discover new, refreshing offers, such as the newly-opened See-Lounge-Restaurant belonging to the hotel Insel der Sinne. Refined Mediterranean cuisine including delicious fish specialities is served on the spacious terrace right above the water – and in addition, you can enjoy the idyllic view over the lake. If it rains, you can sit in the glass pavilion being well-protected.
Where today, there are numerous bathers bustling around during the summer, a few years ago, there was an open-cast lignite mine. The huge bucket wheel excavator 1452 in Hagenwerder tells you about the 250-year old mining tradition in the region of lower Silesian Upper Lusatia. On request, former miners guide you up to 24 metres, showing you around this large mining equipment. In Königshufen, one of the residential areas of Görlitz, there is a church called Hoffnungskirche, reminding of the village Dorf Deutsch Ossig, which used to be located at the site of Berzdorf Lake, and in 1988, had to give way to lignite mining.
At the southern banks of the lake, the exhibition displayed in the „House at the Lake“ in Tauchritz draws your attention to open-cast lignite mining and its impact on agriculture. Furthermore, the five rooms show previous life and crafts in this place. It is a project of co-operation between the congregation of the Evangelical Reconciliation Church in Görlitz, the Association for Local Heritage Tauchritz e.V. and the Association of Upper Lusatian Miners e.V.
